Is there anything that makes a house feel more like a home than the aroma of freshly baked bread? I absolutely love having homemade bread anytime I want it, still warm from the oven. But who has hours to wait for bread dough to rise? Not this busy mom!

That’s why I rely on my easy 20-minute bread dough recipe. It lets me whip up fresh dough fast, so I can enjoy that hot-from-the-oven homemade bread taste in under an hour. No more cold sliced loaves from the store for this girl!

I’ll be honest – I used to pop open a tube of refrigerated dough on busy weeknights. It was so easy to spread onto a sheet for pizza or shape into rolls. But once I perfected this fast homemade dough, I was hooked!

The flavor of bread made from scratch is on a whole different level. And with my shortcut recipe, it’s just as easy as the store-bought stuff. The key is using instant yeast so the dough doesn’t require proofing. Genius, right?

In the short time it takes my oven to preheat, I can mix up a bowl of pillowy bread dough. I just whisk together the yeast, sugar, oil and water to get things going. After adding in the flour and salt, I knead it briefly til the dough is smooth. That’s it – ready to shape however I need it!

We love splitting open a fresh loaf for bruschetta, turning it into chewy sandwich bread, or flattening it out for quick homemade pizzas. And nothing beats being able to whip up a batch of soft dinner rolls or breadsticks on busy weeknights.

However you use it, this easy dough recipe gives you fresh baked bread in a snap. No more waiting around for delivery or settling for cold grocery store loaves. I hope it becomes your secret weapon for homemade bread anytime!

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 packet 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the yeast, sugar, olive oil, and warm water. Let mixture sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • In a separate bowl, stir together the bread flour, whole wheat flour and salt.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined. Knead dough by hand for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding more bread flour 1 tbsp at a time if needed to reduce stickiness.
  • Cover bowl with a damp towel and let dough rest for 10 minutes. Dough is now ready to use.
  • Shape as desired for baking – loaf pan, rolls, pizza crust, etc. Bake as recipe directs.

Notes

The dough can be used right away but has the best flavor when allowed to rise for at least 10 minutes. For faster rising, use very warm water (110°F) when mixing.

I was going to make this bread, but when you didn’t say what the bread is sitting on in picture,I decided not to. What is the stuff on the bottom?

  4. Chris

Would it be possible to replace the bread and whole wheat flour with oat flour? Thank you!

  5. Pam

I’ve been baking this same recipe for years, but it doesn’t come out brown on top. It is kind of pale and browns on the bottom. Still delicious. All my kids make it, too. It’s an easy recipe and makes fantastic toast when sliced.

I was wondering if there is substitute for the bread flour & whole wheat flour? I don’t have either of these but really want to make the bread. All I have is all purpose flour, how do I convert that to get the desired bread I want? Thank you so much.

Hi Janet! I am an old lady with very bad hands due to interpreting sign language for many years. What I wanted to ask you is can I make this bread in my bread machine? I just can’t knead any more. What do you think?
