Ingredients

For the French Toast and Beef
  • 8 slices thick-cut brioche or Texas toast
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder divided — ½ for egg dip, ½ for beef
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder divided — ½ for egg dip, ½ for beef
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt plus a pinch for egg dip
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter for pan-frying, divided
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • ¼ cup dill pickle slices
  • 3 tablespoons finely diced white onion
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds optional, for garnish
For the Special Sauce
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder

Method

Make the Special Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, white wine vinegar, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, and ¼ teaspoon onion powder until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Cook the Beef
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, for 7 to 8 minutes until fully browned. Season with ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Drain excess fat.
Melt the Cheese
  1. Reduce the heat to low. Lay the 4 American cheese slices evenly over the cooked beef. Cover the skillet for 1 minute until the cheese is fully melted. Stir gently to combine, then keep warm on the lowest heat setting.
Make the Egg Dip
  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the 3 eggs, 3 tablespoons whole milk, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
Cook the French Toast
  1. Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon butter. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture for 15 to 20 seconds per side. Working in batches, place the dipped slices into the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until deeply golden. Add the remaining butter between batches as needed.
Assemble
  1. Place one slice of golden toast on a plate. Spoon a generous portion of the cheesy beef mixture on top. Drizzle with special sauce, then top with shredded lettuce, pickle slices, and diced onion. Place a second slice of toast on top, drizzle with more sauce, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using. Serve immediately.

Notes

Storage: Store leftover beef mixture and special sauce separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat beef in a skillet over medium heat. French toast is best made fresh but can be reheated in a skillet with a little butter to restore the crispy exterior.
Lighter swap: Substitute ground turkey or extra-lean ground beef for a more nutritious option. Add a splash of extra Worcestershire sauce when using turkey to boost the savory flavor.
Sodium tip: To reduce sodium, use low-sodium Worcestershire sauce and reduce added salt to taste. Full-fat American cheese contributes sodium as well — swapping for a low-sodium cheddar is a great option if you're watching your intake.
