Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns for serving

Instructions

  • Heat canola oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add chopped onions and green peppers and sauté for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
  • Push the vegetables to the outer edge of the pan and increase heat to medium-high. Add ground beef to the center of the pan, spreading it in an even layer. Let it cook undisturbed for 5 minutes until it begins to brown on the bottom.
  • Season the beef with salt and pepper, then flip it over. Continue cooking, breaking the meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula, until no longer pink and fully cooked, about 2-3 minutes more.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and add ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Stir to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
  • Simmer for 2-3 minutes until flavors meld and sauce reaches desired consistency.
  • Serve hot on hamburger buns, brioche buns, or potato rolls.

Notes

  • For best results, don't substitute the yellow mustard with Dijon or spicy varieties as they can significantly alter the classic flavor profile.
  • If you prefer a thicker filling, simmer the mixture a few minutes longer to reduce the sauce.
  • This recipe doubles easily for feeding a crowd - just use a larger pan and adjust cooking time slightly.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • To reheat, warm in a skillet over medium-low heat for 3-5 minutes until heated through.
  • Try topping your Sloppy Joes with sliced cheddar cheese, pickle chips, or a bit of coleslaw for extra flavor and crunch!
