One of the most beloved Italian-American dishes has to be Chicken Parmesan. This classic comfort food is not only delicious, but it’s also quite simple to prepare. In this blog post, we will answer some common questions about this delightful dish, and provide some tips and tricks to make your Chicken Parmesan a hit!

What is Chicken Parmesan ?

Chicken Parmesan, also known as Chicken Parmigiana, is a popular Italian-American dish that typically consists of breaded and fried chicken breasts topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan, and sometimes provolone cheese. It’s often served with pasta, such as spaghetti or linguine, or even on a sandwich for a tasty, hearty meal.

Where did Chicken Parmesan originate?

While Chicken Parmesan is well-known as an Italian-American dish, its roots can be traced back to Italy. The original dish, called Melanzane alla Parmigiana, was made with breaded and fried eggplant slices instead of chicken. Italian immigrants brought the recipe with them to America, where it eventually evolved into the Chicken Parmesan we know and love today.

How can I make Chicken Parmesan healthier?

For those looking to make a lighter version of Chicken Parmesan, there are a few options. First, consider baking the chicken breasts instead of frying them. This can help reduce the amount of oil and fat in the dish. You can also choose a whole-grain pasta or even a vegetable-based pasta , like zucchini noodles, to serve alongside the chicken. Lastly, try using a lighter tomato sauce with less added sugar, and opt for part-skim mozzarella cheese to reduce the overall calorie count.

Is Chicken Parmesan gluten-free?

Traditional Chicken Parmesan is not gluten-free, as it includes breadcrumbs and all-purpose flour in the breading. However, it’s easy to make a gluten-free version by swapping out these ingredients for gluten-free alternatives. Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and a gluten-free flour blend to create a tasty and safe Chicken Parmesan for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

Can I make Chicken Parmesan ahead of time?

Absolutely! Chicken Parmesan can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake and serve it. To do this, follow the recipe steps up to the point where you would add the sauce and cheese, but don’t bake it yet. Instead, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to serve, simply remove the cover, add the sauce and cheese, and bake as directed.

What side dishes pair well with Chicken Parmesan?

Chicken Parmesan is a versatile dish that pairs well with various side dishes. Classic options include pasta, garlic bread, and a green salad. For a lighter meal, consider serving roasted or steamed vegetables, such as green beans, asparagus, or broccoli. A simple Caesar salad or a caprese salad are also great options for a refreshing side dish.

Servings: 4

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup grated provolone cheese
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup prepared tomato sauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup olive oil for frying you can add more if you need to
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese we’ll use it in parts, so don’t mix it all together
  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour keep some extra handy if needed
  • 1/4 cup fresh mozzarella cut into cute little cubes
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs you might need more, just in case

  • First things first, preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Now, let’s work on those chicken breasts. Place them between two sheets of heavy-duty plastic (like resealable freezer bags) on a flat surface. Use the smooth side of a meat mallet to pound the chicken to a 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Season your chicken generously with salt and pepper. Then, with a sifter or strainer, sprinkle flour on both sides of each chicken breast.
  • In a shallow bowl, beat the eggs and set them aside for a moment.
  • In another bowl, mix together the bread crumbs and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese. Keep this nearby.
  • Now for the fun part! Dip each flour-coated chicken breast into the beaten eggs, then press it into the bread crumb mixture, coating both sides. Do this for all your chicken breasts and let them rest for about 10-15 minutes.
  • In a large skillet, heat 1/2 inch of olive oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Cook the chicken in the hot oil until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Don’t worry, the chicken will finish cooking in the oven.
  • Transfer the chicken to a baking dish . Top each breast with 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce, followed by layers of mozzarella, fresh basil, and provolone cheese. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan on top and drizzle 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil over each breast.
  • Finally, bake your masterpiece in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and browned and the chicken is cooked through. To be sure, an instant-read thermometer should read at least 165°F (74°C) in the center.
