Have you ever wondered about lasagna roll ups? They’re basically these cute, individual pasta parcels filled with all the delicious ingredients and flavors we adore from classic Italian-American lasagna. Plus, they cook up faster than your regular lasagna dish, and they’re great for keeping our portions in check!
Can you freeze lasagna roll ups? You bet! The best way to freeze ’em is before they’re cooked. Once you’ve assembled your roll ups, wrap your casserole dish nice and snug with plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then pop it in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, just thaw it out overnight in the fridge and follow the recipe instructions for baking.
Can you whip up lasagna roll ups ahead of time? Absolutely! You’ve got a couple of options: you can either bake your casserole in advance and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to reheat it in the oven or microwave, or you can assemble the dish (without baking) and keep it in the fridge to be baked a day or two later.
Wondering how to make lasagna roll ups? It’s actually pretty similar to making traditional lasagna. The ingredients are the same, and the main difference is just how you put it all together. While a traditional lasagna is made with layers of noodles and filling, lasagna roll ups have noodles rolled up with the filling tucked inside. So fun, right?
Lasagna Roll Ups
Ingredients
- 12 lasagna noodles cooked
For the Meat Sauce:
- 1¼ pounds ground meat your choice
- 36 ounces marinara sauce
For the Cheese Sauce:
- 2 cups part-skim ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg lightly beaten
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded parmesan cheese
- ½ cup finely chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package directions. Grab a large baking sheet, cover it with aluminum foil, and lay out those cooked noodles flat to cool. Set ’em aside for now.
For the Meat Sauce:
- Heat up a large skillet and brown your choice of meat over medium heat. Once it’s cooked, drain off any excess fat. Stir in that yummy marinara sauce and let it simmer until it’s nice and warm.
For the Cheese Sauce:
- In a good-sized bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, beaten egg, 1 cup of mozzarella, ½ cup of parmesan, and fresh parsley.
Assembling the Roll Ups:
- Spread an even layer of the cheese sauce onto each lasagna noodle. You can use a flat spatula or the back of a spoon to make it nice and smooth.
- Now, take about ¾ of the meat sauce and spread it over each noodle, right on top of the cheese filling.
- Roll those lasagna noodles up nice and snug. Place the rolls in a casserole dish and cover them with the remaining meat sauce. Sprinkle the top with the rest of the parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
- Bake your lasagna roll ups for 20-25 minutes at 350°F. Cover the dish with aluminum foil for the first 15-20 minutes, then uncover and let it bake until that cheese is melted and bubbly.
